The main components of the basal ganglia - as defined functionally - are the striatum, including the dorsal striatum(caudate nuleus and putamen) and ventral striatum(nuleus accumbens and olfactory tubercle), globus pallidus, ventral pallidum, substania nigra, and subthalamic nucleus.
(The largest component of basal ganglia, the striatum (dorsal and ventral) receives input from many brain areas, but only sends output to the other components of the basal ganglia.)
