    2016年6月IEEE的麦克斯韦奖颁发给了机器学习的领军人物Geoffrey Hinton。颁奖辞十分优雅,同时简洁、凝练地解释了机器学习的最新进展以及神经网络的崛起。我忍不住翻译了一下。

    Geoffrey Hinton是深度学习的创立者,受对人脑感知机制的理解以及如何将其应用到计算机中的驱动,他帮助让人工智能更加智慧。
    Hindon是机器学习领域的权威学者。
    他发现并展示在进行非线性回归和分类的基础上,后向传播让神经网络拥有它内部的表达。
    他对后向传播算法的研究是在上世纪80年代机器学习领域复苏的关键,从那以后机器学习被用于语音和视觉物体的识别、欺诈检测、工厂监测以及自动化支票验证。
    他的工作仍然保持在神经网络研究的前沿,他证明深度神经网络可以一级一级地被训练,每一级比前一级表达的概念更加抽象。
    这项工作彻底变革了图像分类、医疗诊断、法律的实施同时让车辆更加安全。

    Geoffrey Hinton, the godfather of deep learning is helping to make artificial intelligence smarter driven by the desire to understand the mechanisms of cognition in the human brain and how to apply them to machines that learn. 

    Hinton is considered the leading authority on machine learning.
    He realized and demonstrated that in addition to performing nonlinear regression and classification, backpropagation allowed neural networks to develop their own internal representations.
    His development of the back propagation algorithm was key to the resurgence of the machine learning field during the nineteen eighties and has been used in speech and visual object recognition, fraud detection, plant monitoring and automated check verification.
    His work still remains at the forefront of neural network learning demonstrating that deep networks can be trained level by level with each level learning to represent slightly more abstract concepts than the previous level.
    This work has completely revolutionized image classification, medical diagnostics, law enforcement and enhanced vehicle safety.
